Crusader Defense Strong Against Valkyries

BELMONT, N.C. - Alex Butorovich scored an equalizer for the Crusaders, but Converse scored late to take the contest 2-1.  The Abbey now stands at 5-2 on the year with a 1-1 conference mark. The Valkyries are now 2-2-2 in 2017 and 1-1-1 in Conference Carolinas play.

Belmont Abbey came out shooting right from the start.  In the first 11 minutes of the game, the Crusaders took four shots, including a header by Nicole Ferren that rolled just a few inches left of the net.  Back-to-back corner kicks by The Abbey kept the offensive pressure on.  The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Belmont Abbey kept showing its offensive ambition with seven shots in the first nine minutes of the second half.  A Converse goal in the 55th minute put the Valkyries up 1-0.  The Crusaders, however, kept shooting and getting more opportunities, while limiting the Valkyries' possessions.  In the 78th minute, Butorovich tied the game with a goal.  Converse went ahead again in the 82nd minute to take the 2-1 win.

On the day, Morgan Patton's nine shots led the Crusaders offense.  As a team, The Abbey outshot Converse 27-5.  Belmont Abbey took five corner kicks, while not allowing any to Converse.  The defense was solid, limiting the Valkyries to five shots on the day.

Belmont Abbey will next take the field on Wednesday, September 27, when it visits Mt. Olive.  That match will begin at 7 p.m.
