BELMONT, N.C. - Rebecca Luca tallied five goals and six assists, while Rebecca Stromberg scored four times in a 20-4 Belmont Abbey win over Barton this afternoon. It was the team's Senior Day. The win improves The Abbey to 10-3 this season and 6-1 in conference play. Barton is now 5-7 overall, and 3-4 against conference opponents.
It only took Madison Eberhardt 1:06 into the game to put The Abbey on the board first on a free position shot. In the next 31 seconds, Marin Felsoci scored twice to put the Crusaders in front 3-0 early. Later in the half, Luca scored a goal, and set up Stromberg for another just 22 seconds apart. It was 9-0 before Barton scored a goal. After Barton made it a 9-4 game, Luca assisted Stromberg and fellow senior Caitlin Cook for the final two goals of the period, and Belmont Abbey owned an 11-4 lead at halftime. The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 21-12 in the period.
In the second, Eberhardt again scored very quickly - just 16 seconds into the half. Luca then tallied two scores in less than a minute. Later in the half, Yasmina Hernandez set up Eberhardt for her third goal of the contest, before scoring a goal of her own at the 17:40 mark. Luca scored the final goal of the game with 10:16 in the game, and The Abbey took the game 20-4. The second half score was 9-0.
On the day, Luca led The Abbey's offensive attack with five goals and six assists, for a total of 11 points. Stromberg and Felsoci added four goals each. Eberhardt contributed three goals. On the defensive side, Hernandez caused three Bulldog turnovers. Felsoci won nine draw controls. The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 34-16.
Belmont Abbey will visit Emmanuel College (GA) on Tuesday, April 10 for a 6 p.m. contest.
