Felsoci and Luca Tally Five Goals Each in Season Opening Victory

GATLINBURG, Tenn. - Marin Felsoci and Rebecca Luca each scored five goals, leading the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over Tusculum College in the season opener this afternoon.  The victory marked the first in the career of new Crusaders head coach Molly Lehman-Lewis.  Due to weather constraints near the Tusculum campus, the game was played at the Rocky Top Sports World facility in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Luca added an assist for six points, while Allison Cline was credited with a pair of assists.  Abby Kranich had four ground balls while Felsoci was among a trio of Crusaders that tallied three.

Felsoci scored two goals in the first 3:50 before Tusculum responded with its first goal just 17 seconds later.  Luca restored the two-goal advantage, 3-1 at the 24:32 mark, but the Pioneers struck three times in a span of 2:07 to take their first lead, 4-3.  However the Abbey answered with its own 3-0 run, starting with a goal by Rebecca Stromberg at the 19:38 mark.  Luca then kept the rally going with a free position goal, and another goal with 13:51 left in the half.  The Abbey defensive unit held the Pioneers scoreless over the last 10 minutes of the half, and the Crusaders owned a 6-5 advantage at halftime.

It only took Felsoci nine seconds to score the first goal of the second half.  A few minutes later, she put The Abbey in front 8-5 on a free position goal.  Later in the half, the Crusaders scored two goals in a 31-second span, including a man-up, free position goal by Yasmina Hernandez.  With 19:18 left in the game, Kylie Eastman scored a man-down goal for The Abbey for an 11-7 lead.  Meanwhile, the tough Crusader defense held Tusculum scoreless for an 11-minute stretch.  Luca tallied the final goal for The Abbey at the 3:34 mark, and the Crusaders finished with the 13-10 victory.

On the day, Felsoci and Luca's five goals led the Crusaders' offensive performance.  Felsoci also won five draw controls.  Annie Brannon made 12 saves in goal.

Belmont Abbey will visit Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday, February 20 for a 5 p.m. game.
