Belmont Abbey sophomore midfielder MacKenzie Miller scored six goals on nine shots while Katy Connery added five on seven shots with six draw control wins and nine ground balls as the Crusaders gained an easy 18-7 season-opening victory over Roberts Wesleyan this afternoon. Roberts Wesleyan falls to 0-2.
The Crusaders controlled the game from the start, opening up a 9-2 lead at the half as the nine goals came on 16 shots.
After conceding the opening goal, the Abbey scored three straight to claim a lead it would never lose again. Connery scored the first and Miller netted the other two. Roberts Wesleyan stemmed the tide briefly with a goal at the 15:20 mark, but that would be its last goal of the half as the Crusaders started a string of nine unanswered, including the final six of the first half. The nine goal string came from six different players, including three freshmen who recorded their first career goals: Katelin Glass, Jordan Hofmeister and Kassie Easter.
Up 12-2, Roberts Wesleyan scored two straight, but the Crusaders countered with three-straight to increase their lead to 15-4. Belmont Abbey scored three of the game's final goals to seal the 18-7 victory.
Belmont Abbey outshot its opponent 29-16 and won 19 of 29 draw controls. The Crusaders converted five of six free position shots and collected 29 ground balls.
Goalkeeper Reilly Johnson, in her first career game, stopped four shots and collected one ground ball.
