Fungate Earns Double-Double in 74-70 OT Win Over King

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Manuela Fungate scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team to a 74-70 overtime win at King University this afternoon.  With the victory, The Abbey improves to 7-4 this season, with a 4-1 record against Conference Carolinas opponents.  The Tornado dipped to 4-5 overall, with a 1-2 conference record.

How it Happened

  • King took an early 7-4 lead, but they did not score a field goal on the Crusaders over the last 8:39 of the first quarter
  • Allie Downing scored 10 points in the quarter, and The Abbey led 18-9 after the period ended
  • The second quarter was very back-and-forth, with both teams scoring 14 in the period.  The Crusaders led 32-23 at halftime
  • After a back-and-forth start to the third, the Crusader defense finished the quarter strong, allowing just two points over the last four minutes of the period.  This gave The Abbey a 49-33 lead heading into the final period
  • The Tornado made a 27-point comeback in the fourth, but Fungate scored essential field goals throughout the period, and the two teams went into overtime tied at 60
  • It only took the Crusaders 1:03 into the overtime period to taker a strong 65-60 lead, capped by a Maria Kuhlman 3-pointer
  • Downing made another three at the 1:15 mark to put the Crusaders up 68-66
  • As King began to foul late, Kuhlman and Hannah Roney made free throws in the final minute to wrap up the 74-70 win
  • On the day, Fungate's 16 points and 13 boards made her second double-double of the season
  • Downing finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Kuhlman added 13 points and five boards
