MT. OLIVE, N.C. - Irelynn Davisson made five three-pointers and Belmont Abbey took a 73-56 victory at the University of Mount Olive this afternoon. The win puts the Crusaders at 17-7 on the year, with a 14-3 conference record. The Trojans are now 9-15 on the season, and 7-9 against conference opponents.
Allie Downing and Emry Tsitouris scored each of the first 10 points for the Crusaders. After that, the defensive efforts held Mt. Olive to one field over three and a half minutes. Tsitouris made a pair of free throws to close out the quarter, and the Crusaders led 20-19 after the first.
The second opened up with Tsitouris and Downing again getting The Abbey off to a fast start. Similarly, the defense only gave up one Trojan field goal over the first five minutes of the game. Belmont Abbey went on a 13-2 run in that span. Irelynn Davisson made back-to-back 3-pointers during the run. Hannah Roney nailed a 3-pointer to finish off the scoring in the period, and the Crusaders owned a 38-27 lead at halftime. The Trojans never pulled closer than six points in the quarter.
While The Abbey struggled to score early in the third, a 3-point shot by Davisson got the Crusaders some momentum back. Then she made another 3 to put the Crusaders in front by seven at the 2:35 mark. She also closed out the quarter by nailing a jump shot in the final minute, giving Belmont Abbey a 51-45 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was all Abbey. Taylor Gittings made a jumper just 12 seconds into the period. The defense allowed just one Trojan field goal over the first seven minutes. Tsitouris made her free throws and drew an offensive foul. A 3-pointer by Downing gave the Crusaders a 64-49 lead. When it was all said and done, The Abbey finished with a 73-56 win.
On the day, Tsitouris led The Abbey with 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. She made 11 of her 12 free throws. Davisson went 5-for-9 from three-point range, finishing with 17 points. Downing contributed with 11 points, six boards, and four assists. As a team, the Crusaders earned 12 steals.
Belmont Abbey will travel to North Greenville University on Wednesday, February 14 for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
