BELMONT, N.C. - Senior Emry Tsitouris led a trio of Crusaders scoring in double figures in today's 74-68 win over Erskine College. The win moves The Abbey to 10-4 this year, with a 7-0 conference mark. The Flying Fleet are now 4-8 overall, and 3-3 in Conference Carolinas play. It marks the first time Belmont Abbey has started out 7-0 in conference play during Head Coach Jason Williams' tenure.
After trailing 14-4 early, the Crusaders scored two three-pointers in the last 42 seconds of the opening quarter to climb within four at 14-10. In the second, two early three-pointers and another later by Alex Busch pulled The Abbey to within two at 25-23. Then a 7-0 run in the last 1:33 of the period, including four straight points by Tsitouris, put The Abbey in front 33-30 at halftime. Belmont Abbey made five three-pointers in the quarter.
In the middle of the third quarter, Belmont Abbey went on a 10-0 run to take a strong 46-37 lead. Seven of those ten points came from Tsitouris, while freshman Allie Downing scored three. At the end of the quarter, the Crusaders owned a 54-50 advantage. In the fourth, the Flying Fleet came to within four points, but never got closer than that.
Tsitouris finished the night with 21 points and ten rebounds. Downing contributed 12 points and eight boards. Maria Kuhlman scored 16 points and handed out four assists.
Belmont Abbey will next play Limestone College on Saturday, January 13. That game will tip off at 2 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.
