MARS HILL, N.C. - Emry Tsitouris recorded her second double-double in three games as Belmont Abbey earned a 77-65 victory at Mars Hill University this evening. The Abbey improved to 1-2 on the year. The Lions are also now 1-2.
After trailing early in the contest, the Crusaders went on an 8-2 run, capped by a three-point play by Tsitouris, to take an 18-17 lead. At the end of the first quarter, Mars Hill led 23-21. In the second, the defensive play came out strong, holding the Lions to one basket in a 2:33 span. Belmont Abbey ended the half on a 5-0 run, capped by a jumper from Allie Downing, to take a 40-36 lead into halftime.
The streak continued into the second half, which Belmont Abbey opened with a 6-0 run to take a 46-36 lead. The stubborn Abbey defense did not give up a point for the first three minutes of the period. With 1:52 left in the third, a layup by Keyla Hines, who made the ensuing free throw, gave The Abbey a 58-45 lead. The Crusaders led 63-50 at the end of the quarter. Then, with 5:42 left in the game, Irelynn Davisson nailed a three-pointer to give The Abbey its largest lead of the game at 72-54. From there, Belmont Abbey maintained a double-digit lead, en route to a 77-65 win.
