BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team dropped a nailbiter to Southern Wesleyan on Senior Night, 75-71. The Abbey is now 10-15 on the year and 8-12 against Conference Carolinas opponents. Southern Wesleyan moved to 6-18 on the season and 4-16 in conference play.
The Crusaders got off to a hot start, scoring each of the first six points of the game. The defense was also strong holding the Warriors to one basket over a 3:29 span late in the quarter. Freshman Chrystal Ezechukwu scored each of the past seven Abbey points of the period, and Southern Wesleyan led 16-15 at the end of the first. In the second quarter, SWU got out to a good start early, but Alex Busch scored the last five Crusader points of the half. The Warriors led 36-25 at halftime.
The early part of the third went back and forth. The fourth quarter was all Abbey. Senior Gabrielle Bethel scored a layup, was fouled, and converted her free throw in the first minute. But junior Alex Busch would steal the show, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter. She scored 13 in a row to help the Abbey erase a big deficit and the team pulled to within two at 69-67. In the end, however, the run fell short and the Abbey took a 75-71 loss.
On the night, Busch led the Crusaders' offensive efforts with 22 points. Ezechukwu chipped in with 19 points and seven rebounds. Bethel scored ten points and grabbed nine rebounds. Morgan Midkiff scored six and handed out seven assists.
