BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey women's basketball squad won a 64-52 contest over Pfeiffer this evening in the Wheeler Center. The victory puts the Crusaders at 10-14 on the year with a 8-11 conference mark. Pfeiffer moves to 8-15 on the year and 6-13 against Conference Carolinas opponents.
Right away the Crusader defense went to work, allowing just one Falcon basket in the first 3:15 of the game. The last four minutes of the period had multiple lead changes, though Pfeiffer did own a 22-18 lead at the end of the quarter. Guards Taylor Johnson and Larisa Bishop each scored six points in the quarter. Johnson scored each of the first six Abbey points of the second, bringing the Abbey to within four at 28-24. Then the Abbey defense took off again, surrendering just one Pfeiffer point in the last 6:30 of the half. During that span, Belmont Abbey went on a 12-0 run and finished the half with a 33-29 lead. By that point, senior Gabrielle Bethel had pulled down nine rebounds.
In the third, it only took one possession and 34 seconds for Bishop to get the offense in gear with a jumper. Just a few minutes later, the Abbey jumped out to a 41-34 lead. Meanwhile, the Falcons continued to struggle against the tough Crusader defense. The Abbey went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a 52-42 lead. In the fourth, the Abbey lead never fell below six and the team rolled to a 64-52 victory.
The Crusaders will be back in action on Saturday night when they host Southern Wesleyan on Senior Night. The game will tip-off at 5:30pm.
