CENTRAL, S.C. -- Taylor Johnson scored 19 points and Gabriele Bethel tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but Southern Wesleyan held off Belmont Abbey 78-71 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Taylor Gittings also reached double figures with 11 points, while adding seven boards. Tatiana Manuel led four Southern Wesleyan players in double figures with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
The teams were pretty even through the first 10 minutes with the Warriors holding a 16-15 lead. SWU created a little separation in the second, building a 35-29 advantage by intermission. The Crusaders rallied from a 19-15 deficit early in the period, using a 7-2 run to lead 22-21. But Southern Wesleyan scored seven straight to move back ahead.
In the fourth, Belmont Abbey tied the game at 64-all when Bethel capped a 9-0 run with a conventional three-point play with 3:25 to play, but SWU responded with 10 straight points. The Warriors also made all eight of their free throw attempts in the final 42 seconds to prevent a comeback.
Belmont Abbey returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Erskine.
