SPARTANBURG, SC - The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team dropped a 75-60 decision at Converse this evening. The loss puts the Abbey record at 7-6 on the season and 5-3 in Conference Carolinas play. The Valkyries are now 3-8 with a 2-5 conference mark.
Taylor Johnson and Gabrielle Bethel scored each of the Abbey's first ten points, including eight in the game's first three and a half minutes. Briana Grier scored each of the team's next five points, and at the end of the period the teams were tied at 17.
The Abbey fell into a 24-19 deficit early in the second, but the stubborn defense of the Crusaders went on a span of three minutes in which it only gave up one Converse basket. The team trailed by as many as 12 points in the quarter, but they scored five points in the final 31 seconds to end the half, highlighted by a deep three-point shot by Alexius Hampton as time expired. The Valkyries led 37-31 at the break. At the half, Johnson and Taylor Gittings led the team in scoring, with six points each.
In the opening minutes of the third, Johnson sunk a three-pointer to keep the Abbey within striking distance. She finished with seven of the team's 15 points in the quarter, as the Crusaders trailed 64-46 going into the final period. The Abbey put together a 10-2 run at the end of the game, highlighted by a Bethel put-back off a shot by Johnson. In the end, however, the Valkyries won the contest 75-60.
On the night, Johnson led the Abbey's scoring effort with 15. Grier scored 10. Bethel finished with an impressive nine points and 13 rebounds.
Belmont Abbey will be back for more action on Saturday at 2pm, when it visits Southern Wesleyan.
