In a must-win scenario for the Belmont Abbey Women's Basketball team, Gabrielle Bethel picked up her 16th double-double as the Crusaders defeated Pfeiffer by a 67-56 score at Merner Gymnasium. The Crusaders are now in a three way tie for the seventh spot in the Conference Carolinas standings. At 7-14 in conference play, the Crusaders find themselves in another must-win game at Converse on Friday.
The Crusaders raced out to a ten point lead with a solid defensive effort that held the Falcons to four points in the opening stanza. Pfeiffer would manage to climb back into the contest with a 21 point outburst in the second quarter, trimming the Abbey lead to 27-25.
The second half would be a springboard for the Abbey offense, outscoring Pfeiffer 40-31 in the final 20 minutes, as Gabrielle Bethel scored 16 in the half to lead the Crusaders back to a double figure lead. On the night, the junior from Fayetteville, would get a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.
With the win tonight, the Crusaders split the season series and position themselves in a three-way tie with Pfeiffer and Lees-McRae, with two spots up for grabs. The tiebreaker scenario favors Pfeiffer first, then the Abbey.
Lees-McRae will take on North Greenville Friday, while Pfeiffer faces Southern Wesleyan. The Crusaders could still finish a six seed with a win over Converse and losses by North Greenville and Pfeiffer.
The regular season for the Lady Crusaders will conclude with a 7:00PM tip in Spartanburg. A win over Converse would clinch a spot in the Conference Carolinas tournament, beginning Monday on the road.
