Women's Basketball Loses At Shaw, 114-53

The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team lost at Shaw by a 114-53 score this afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium. The Bears improve to 3-1, while the Abbey drops to 1-3.

Shaw shot 59 percent from the field finished 18-28 from the free throw line while outrebounding the Crusaders 54-36.

Belmont Abbey grabbed an early 3-0 lead and would build it to 7-5, but Shaw closed the first quarter on a 21-6 flurry to lead 27-11 after one.

The second quarter saw Shaw outscore the Crusaders 24-10 to carry a 51-21 lead into the halftime break. The Bears shot 57 percent from the field in the first quarter and 71 percent in the second.

Shaw's hot shooting continued in the third quarter, converting 71 percent of its shots to outscore the Crusaders 34-16 in the period to build the lead to 85-37 after three.

The hosts added 29 points in the fourth with the Crusaders scoring 16 to produce the final score.

Freshman Taylor Johnson led the Abbey with 11 points. Larisa Bishop added nine with Taylor Gittings recording eight. Gabrielle Bethel pulled down seven rebounds. Briana Grier handed out five assists.

Belmont Abbey is back in action Tuesday night at 5:30 when it opens Conference Carolinas play at North Greenville.
