Four of five Belmont Abbey starters reached double figures, led by senior forward McKenzie Owen's game-high 26 points, as the Crusaders women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six with a 76-63 win at Pfeiffer this evening. Belmont Abbey improves to 14-8 overall and 10-6 in league play, while the Falcons drop to 5-15 overall and 4-12 in Conference Carolinas.
Owen, who scored 19 of her points in the first half, netted 13 of the Abbey's first 15 points as she sank 8-10 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Caitlyn Ranson added 17 points while Gabrielle Bethel and Briana Grier both contributed 12 points. The Crusaders shot 42 percent from the field and made 3-6 from three-point range.
The game was tied twice but the Crusaders never trailed as Owen's first half contributions sent the Crusaders into the halftime break with a comfortable 39-29 lead.
Belmont Abbey maintained its double digit lead for most of the second half as the lead never dropped below nine points.
19 of the Abbey's 24 points were assisted as Grier led the way with six. Ranson handed out five and Morgan Midkiff totaled four.
Owen added five rebounds, one assist and a steal before fouling out. She stayed on the floor for 30 minutes.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Saturday night at 5:30 when it hosts Converse.
