Jason Williams Named Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Coach of the Year
First year Belmont Abbey Head Women's Basketball Coach Jason Williams has been selected as the 2013-14 Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year.
Williams becomes the program's first conference Coach of the Year since the 1991 season and is the first since the College rose to the NCAA Divsion II level in 1995.
In his first year on the Crusaders sideline, Williams guided the Abbey to a 21-8 record-its first 20 win season since 2004-05-and its highest conference finish in the same time period. The Crusaders were picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll and ended the year second, just one game out of first place.
The year was filled with milestones as the Abbey recorded its first regional ranking in ten years (currently ranked sixth), received a vote in the national poll on February 4 and placed a school-record four players on the all-conference team. Junior forward McKenzie Owen was selected to the first team, the first Crusader named to the top team since 2008.
It is Williams's first year as a head coach and only his second year coaching women. He was an Abbey men's assistant from 2006-12 and spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant women's basketball coach at Jacksonville State University.
