Belmont Abbey senior guard Kelsey Long led all scorers with a season-high 19 points, convering eight of nine from the field, and junior forward McKenzie Owen added 18 as the Crusaders women's basketball team cruised past Pfeiffer, 70-51 this evening at Merner Gym. The win gives the Abbey a season sweep of the series as it improves to 16-7 overall and 10-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Falcons drop to 3-18 overall and 2-11 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Crusaders made half of their shots (28-56) while the defense forced 15 Pfeiffer turnovers-equaling the number of made field goals for the Falcons-and won the rebounding battle 54-40.
Belmont Abbey never trailed after falling behind 12-11 at the 15:11 mark of the first half, in which the Crusaders outscored the Falcons 27-11 to carry a 39-23 lead into halftime.
Never challenged in the second half, the Abbey extended their lead as the Falcons made just one of their first ten shots. Pfeiffer made just three field goals in the first 13 minutes in the second half.
From there, the Crusaders cruised home, as their lead rose to as high as 25 on a Marilyn Malphrus layup at the 6:03 mark, and she capped off the victory with a traditional three point play with 1:11 left.
