CENTRAL, S.C. - Alyssa Sciaudone went a combined 7-for-8 with three runs and four RBIs as the Crusader softball team swept Southern Wesleyan by scores of 9-2 and 3-2. The Abbey now stands at 14-26 overall, and 5-9 against conference opponents. The Warriors are now 7-30 overall, and 2-10 in Conference Carolinas play.
Sciaudone put The Abbey on the board first, with a single in the first inning that scored Melissa Neyhouse. The Crusaders exploded in the second, with Vienna Benavides hitting a 2-RBI triple down the right field line. Benavides went on to score off a single by Neyhouse.
In the fifth inning, the Crusaders again put up a 3-run inning. Sciaudone knocked a single to right field to score Elena Duran. Later, Hayley Beard hit a single that scored Sciaudone. Then Katie Allison scored Brooke Pegram to put The Abbey in front 8-1.
Annabeth Watkins (6-11) threw a complete game, surrendering just two runs on five hits. She struck out four Warriors.
Morgan Smith got the scoring started in game two as she singled to left field, bringing home Duran. In the third, Sciaudone recorded her third RBI of the day with a hit to right field that scored Brianna Embler and put The Abbey in front 2-0. In the fifth, Sciaudone hit the homerun that proved to be the game winner and The Abbey finished off the 3-2 win.
Ivorie Maltby (5-10) retired each of the first four batters she faced. She threw a complete game, allowing just six hits and tossing four strikeouts.
Belmont Abbey will welcome Wingate on Tuesday, April 10. That doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
