BELMONT, N.C. - Alexis Rogers scored twice and earned an RBI as the Crusader softball team split today's doubleheader with King University 1-1. Game scores were 8-0 and 8-4. The Abbey now stands at 10-22, with a 3-5 record in conference play. The Tornado are now 13-13 on the year, and 4-2 against conference opponents.
In the opener, Brooke Pegram and Melissa Neyhouse registered hits for the Crusaders. The Tornado struck for one in the first on a home run, then added five in the third and two in the fourth to earn the win. Ivory Maltby (3-6) walked two in 2.2 innings of work.
In game 2, the Crusaders had a very strong second inning, scoring four runs on four hits, and reaching on an error. Rogers got the Crusaders on board with a bunt to shortstop that scored Claire Doyle. Rogers and Alexis Pereiro both went on to score on the King fielding error to make it a 4-0 Abbey lead after two.
In the fourth, Peyton Wilson brought home Pereiro to make it a 6-3 Crusader lead. In the next inning, Brooke Pegram and Rogers took advantage of another Tornado fielding error to cap off the scoring and take the 8-4 victory.
For the game, Pereiro went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Doyle was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Rogers finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Annabeth Watkins (4-9) earned the win, with four innings pitched, and walked none.
Belmont Abbey returns to action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader at Newberry.
