BELMONT, N.C. - Melissa Neyhouse and Brooke Pegram had hits in both games of the doubleheader, and Peyton Wilson enjoyed a pair of hits in the opener, helping Belmont Abbey to a split against Chowan in the 2018 softball home opener. The Crusaders took the opener 4-1, while Chowan rebounded in the nightcap 3-2. The Abbey is now 3-1, while the Hawks are now 2-2.
In the opener, Belmont Abbey plated a run in the first on a two-out RBI single by Wilson. She scored Pegram, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning.
Chowan countered in the top of the fourth with a double to left center, driving in Shannon Buchanan from second.
Three unearned runs in the fifth proved to be the difference for The Abbey. Claire Doyle led off with an infield single and was replaced by pinch runner Alexis Rogers, who stole second. After a groundout, Briana Embler reached on an error, then stole second. After another groundout, Rogers put the Crusaders ahead 2-1 when she scored on a throwing error. A wild pitch brought home Embler from third for a 3-1 lead before Wilson delivered an RBI single two batters later to cap the three-run frame.
Chace Helms (1-0) earned the win with a complete-game four hitter. She walked two and struck out six.
In the nightcap, Chowan jumped ahead with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but Belmont Abbey answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Neyhouse tied the game with a single to right that scored Rogers, who had reached on a fielder's choice, but then stolen second. Later in the inning, Anna Mixa doubled to left center, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
However, in the top of the seventh, Chowan delivered a two-run, two-out double to left center to take the 3-2 win.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday at USC-Aiken.
