Wilson Leads Crusaders to Sweep of Knights to Open Season

LAURINBURG, N.C. - Peyton Wilson hit a 2-run homerun in the seventh inning of game 2, and the Crusaders earned a 2-0 sweep on the St. Andrews Knights.  The Abbey starts the 2018 season 2-0, while St. Andrews is 0-2.

In game 1, the Crusader offense got off to a fast start, with each of the first five batters reaching base.  Peyton Wilson hit a double to left to score Chace Helms.  The Abbey would finish the inning with four runs, capped by a Wilson run off Morgan Smith.

The Crusaders put two more runs on the board in the third. Melissa Neyhouse scored on a single by Wilson.  Then Lauren Clifford reached to bring Brianna Embler home.

Belmont Abbey put the game away in the fifth, as each of the first three batters reached base before Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score Elena Duran.

The Crusader defense only gave up three Knight hits in the game.


In the second game, Alexis Rogers brought home the first Crusader run in the third, scoring Alyssa Sciaudone.  This tied the game at one.  The Crusaders took the lead in the fourth when Katie Allison singled Anna Mixa home.

In the seventh, The Abbey's offense took off.  Neyhouse hit a single to center field before Wilson homered to make it a 6-1 Abbey lead.  In the end, it was a 6-5 Belmont Abbey victory.

On the day, Wilson led the Crusader offense with three hits, two runs, and five RBIs.  Chace Helms also earned three RBIs.  On the mound, Helms gave up just one St. Andrews hit in three innings pitched.

Belmont Abbey will next welcome Chowan University on Thursday, February 8.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
