BELMONT, N.C. -- Shannan Mas scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort and Peyton Wilson drove in two runs during three-run second leading Belmont Abbey to a 3-2 win in the opener of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took the second game 9-6 to earn the split.
Katherine Starnes was three-for-three in the second game, while six other Crusaders had a pair of hits on the afternoon.
After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Belmont Abbey (7-23-2, 5-11) plated all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second. Alyssa Sciaudone hit a one-out home run to left center to start things off. Brooke Pegram singled to center and was sacrificed to second before a single by Alexis Rogers put runners on the corners. Wilson launched a two-run double to right to make the score 3-0.
Southern Wesleyan (8-30, 4-14) got on the board in the third and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Mas gained a strike out and induced a popup to strand the tying run at first to earn her first win (1-7).
In the nightcap, the Warriors opened a 5-0 lead with three runs in the third and two in the fourth, but Belmont Abbey answered with four in its half of the fourth. Melissa Neyhouse opened the frame by reaching on an error, then advancing on a wild pitch. After a walk and strike out, Starnes reached on an infield single to load the bases. Selena Thompson singled in a pair of runs with another error putting runners on second and third. One out later, Dani Marietta delivered a pinch-hit single up the middle to drive in another pair.
Southern Wesleyan answered with four in the sixth for a 9-4 lead before The Abbey tried to rally. Alexis Rogers had a bases-loaded single for a run in the sixth, then Pegram had an RBI single in the seventh for the final margin.
Starter Amelia Saldivar (2-3) took the loss after pitching into the fourth.
Belmont Abbey returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Limestone in its #RaisetheRed action. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 2 p.m.
