GAFFENY, SC - The Belmont Abbey Crusaders fell to Limestone on the road Wednesday by scores of 6-3 and 2-1 at Babe Ruth Field.
In game one, the Crusaders Samantha Jacobs and Limestone's Josie Weber were matched up inside the circle, seeking to the get the upper hand for their respective club.
The Saints struck first with a four run third inning, as Sam Thornton's bunt single would force an errant throw that allowed Bailie Maybry and Shay Reynolds to score. Thornton would score later in the frame on a double from Erika Hanson. Hanson would score to close out the inning as Tori Noland would convert Hanson on a ground out.
The four runs would be adequate for Josie Weber, as she would win her fifteenth decision on the season.
Sam Jacobs took the loss in the opener, falling to 6-9.
Alexandra Pearsall was the offensive star for the Abbey in game one, going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
In game two, all the action occurred in the fifth inning, as Laura Williams tossed the complete game for the Abbey, allowing two runs on four hits.
The run would not be enough, as Limestone (29-17, 15-4) would answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs and Shay Reynolds on first, Bailie Maybry would double to right center as Reynolds sprinted home with the tying run.
Reynolds would score on a Sam Thornton single to right, giving Limestone starter Courtney Smith a chance to pick up her eighth win on the year.
Smith would deliver, tossing the final two innings, allowing a lone base hit while punching out four to secure the win.
Rachel Pike would reach base three times in the nightcap, walking twice, while collecting a base hit.
The Crusaders return to Crusaders Field on Saturday, as the Abbey will celebrate their seniors against Montreat. First pitch begins at 2pm.
