BELMONT, NC – The Belmont Abbey Softball team defeated Emmanuel College in both of this afternoons double header. The pair of wins moves the Crusaders to a 17-25 overall record and 11-9 in conference play while Emmanuel falls to 25-22 overall and 9-10 in conference action.
The Crusaders jumped off to a big start with the bases loaded and two outs Lauren Clifford would be walked and Mackenzie Dziendziel would score. Immediately after Rachel Pike would single to center field while Brooke Pegram would score. The crusaders wouldn't stop there as Katherine Starnes would cause an Emmanuel error allowing Jena Reisenauer to score.
Samantha Jacobs would have a big day on the mound allowing just 4 hits on the day with 0 runs. Jacobs improves to a 6-8 record with the win.
In game two of the day Emmanuel would strike first in the top of the 4th with the bases loaded Crystal Busbee would bring Kalen Callaway in for a run.
The crusaders would battle back with 6 hits and 4 runs from Clifford, Pike, Starnes, and Pereiro. The 4 runs would bring the crusaders to a 4-1 lead going into the 5th inning.
Halle Cheek would rumble back with a homer to left field. That would be the last of Emmanuel's runs for the day.
In the bottom of the 5th the crusaders would have 2 runs on 5 hits as Salena Thompson would score off of Anna Mixa's single. Starnes would bring Reisenauer in with a single to center field.
Laura Williams would earn the win pitching all seven innings allowing just 9 hits and 2 runs. The win improves her record to 6-6 on the year.
The crusaders will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon with a road trip to Limestone for their final regular season conference matchup. Softball action will return to Crusader Field on Saturday, April 23 for Senior Day with a first pitch expecting to be thrown at 2:00 PM.
