CENTRAL, SC - The Belmont Abbey Crusaders traveled to the South Carolina Upstate on Friday to compete against Southern Wesleyan University in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader. The Crusaders won both games this evening by scores of 7-0 and 9-6.
In game one, Laura Williams got the start in the circle for the Abbey. Seeking her fifth win of the year, the freshman was razor sharp against the Warriors, going five shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out two.
Offensively, the Crusaders scored six runs in the sixth inning to run away from Southern Wesleyan in the opener.
In the inning, the Crusaders sent ten batters to the plate, collecting four hits, as well as a pair of walks.
Shannan Mas would come in relief of Williams to close out the contest, going the final two innings, allowing one hit.
In game two, Peyton Wilson got the start for the Abbey. Southern Wesleyan would counter with Hunter Hoskins in the nightcap.
In the early going, it was all Warriors, as a three run fourth was followed by a two run fifth, giving Southern Wesleyan a 5-1 lead. The highlight for the Warriors was a two run homer from Lizzie Fela, stretching the lead to four runs.
In the sixth, the Abbey roared back with a seven run outburst, giving relief pitcher Samantha Jacobs the opportunity to earn her fifth win of the year.
In the frame, the Crusaders brought twelve batters to the plate, scoring the seven runs on five hits and a pair of walks. The go ahead hit came off the bat of Mackenzie Dziendziel, a double that scored two runs and gave the Abbey the lead for good.
Jacobs would finish off the Warriors for her fifth win of the year.
The Crusaders return home for a 1pm doubleheader tomorrow against Emmanuel. The matchup against the Lion's will be the final Conference twinbill at Crusaders Field for the 2016 schedule.
