The Belmont Abbey Softball team split today's doubleheader with Davis & Elkins College. Davis & Elkins won the first game 4-3 in 8 innings, while the Crusaders took the second game 10-2 in five innings. The Senators are now 9-3 on the year. Belmont Abbey now stands at 5-15 on the season.
In the opener, the Abbey struck first as senior Jena Reisenauer placed a ball into the shallow outfield to bring in Mackenzie Dziendziel for a first-inning lead. In the second, junior Dani Marietta scored on a sacrifice groundout from Katherine Starnes.
In the fourth Reisenauer knocked a pitch out of the park to give the Abbey a 3-1 advantage. The Abbey defense continued to play well through the first six innings.
In the seventh, the Senators tied the game at three, and then won in the extra inning. For the game, Crusaders pitchers struck out three Davis & Elkins batters and held the Senators to 4-for-29 hitting.
In the nightcap, the Crusaders' offense exploded in the first inning. Dziendziel hit a triple in the Crusaders' first at-bat of the game. Freshman Rachel Pike was hit by a pitch, and then stole second base. Freshman Brittany Ortiz next brought in Dziendziel on a single to left field. Then Reisenauer hit her second homerun of the day to put the Abbey in front 4-2. The Abbey went on to score five more runs in the inning for a 9-2 lead. In all, 13 Crusaders came to the plate in the inning.
Crusader pitching forced the Senators into three straight 3-up, 3-down innings. In the fourth, sophomore Kasey Boughman scored off a single from Lauren Clifford to make it a 10-2 Abbey lead. Reisenauer closed out the fifth to seal the 10-2 victory. Peyton Wilson got the win for Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders did not give up a walk in the game.
On the day, Dziendziel scored three runs for the Crusaders. Reisenauer went 3-for-6 and scored two runs, while bringing in five.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against the visiting King Tornado. The first game will begin at 1:00 PM
