The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept at the University of Mount Olive in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 8-0 in five innings and taking an 8-1 loss in game two. Belmont Abbey falls to 9-34 overall and 3-11 in Conference Carolinas, while Mount Olive improves to 16-24 overall and 4-6 in league play.
Belmont Abbey has just two games remaining on the schedule, a Tuesday doubleheader at Pfeiffer.
In the opener, the Trojans scored seven runs in the second on five hits while taking advantage of two Crusaders errors.
One inning later Mount Olive tacked on another run to build the lead to 8-0.
Belmont Abbey threatened in the fifth to extend the game past the fifth, but a fielder's choice groundout ended the game there after five innings.
Carly White earned the win after allowing five hits in five innings, striking out three. Samantha Jacobs allowed six runs, four earned, on three hits in two and two thirds innings. Five different Crusaders had one hit.
In the nightcap, the Trojans plated four in the first to take an early lead, and the Crusaders scored their first run of the day in the top of the fourth as Dani Marietta doubled home Shanie McConnell, who led off with a double of her own.
Mount Olive closed the scoring with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Caitlin Ewers was credited with the win in three and two-thirds innings of relief, limiting the Abbey to just two hits while fanning four. Catelyn Presley gave up four runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning.
