The Belmont Abbey softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against Barton, winning game one 8-0 in six innings and losing the second game 2-1. The Crusaders record is now 5-16 with a 3-1 conference record as Barton moves to 4-8, 1-1 in conference.
The first game was all Crusaders as they scored three runs in the second, starting with a bases loaded walk to Nicole Stovall. Shanie McConnell drove in two more with a single to left. The Crusaders struck again in the third when Dani Marietta was hit by a pitch, moved around the bases on ground balls, then scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth Belmont Abbey plated three more runs as Kaitlyn Jones and Marietta each singled followed by an RBI double by Kinsey McClure. Marietta and McClure came around to score on Brooke Baliles' single to right centerfield. The Abbey tacked on one more run in the sixth when Shannon Cardillo doubled and was brought home on a double by Jones.
Samantha Jacobs recorded the win pitching all six innings not allowing any runs, giving up only three hits, walking one and striking out ten batters. Barton's Liz White suffered the loss tossing two innings and giving up three runs on three hits, walking three.
The second game was a pitching duel between Belmont Abbey's Caitlyn Presley and Barton's Ashlyn Reagan. Both pitchers threw complete games only allowing three hits each. Presley gave up only two runs walking three and striking out nine while Reagan allowed one run, walking two and striking out five.
Barton's only two runs came in the third inning off Lindsey Sharpe's home run to centerfield. The Crusaders rallied in the fifth as they loaded the bases after a Stoval infield single, Jones walk and Marietta hit by pitch. Stoval scored on a wild pitch but the Crusaders were not able to push any more runs across.
The Crusaders have their third straight double header in as many days as they host Davis & Elkins at Crusader Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
