Softball Loses Both Games On Final Day Of Catawba Invitational

The Belmont Abbey softball team dropped both of its games on the final day of the Catawba Invitational, as the Crusaders fell to Catawba 4-1 and lost to Lenoir-Rhyne by a 4-1 score. Belmont Abbey is now 2-13 on the year. The Crusaders defeated Davis & Elkins 5-4 in nine innings on Saturday before falling to Brevard 7-1.

The Crusaders hosted Catawba last Tuesday in Belmont and made the return trip today. The Abbey jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first as Shanie McConnell led off with a single and scored on Kaitlyn Jones's double to left.

The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Indians plated two on a Gina Gerone homer.

One inning later Catawba tacked on two more on a Holli Chandler triple and the Indians closed the scoring in the fifth on an RBI single.

Carley Tysininger worked the final three and two thirds innings of scoreless relief of Emily D. Hunneycutt to earn the win. She fanned eight. Samantha Jacobs yielded five runs, four earned, on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked six.

Jones collected two of the Abbey's four hits, with McConnell and Kinsey McClure recording one each.

In the nightcap, the Crusaders were the home team against Lenoir-Rhyne and the contest was scoreless until the fourth when the Abbey broke through.

Jones worked a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Dani Marietta. She moved to third on a single by McClure and scored on Addison Bollick's groundout to the pitcher.

Belmont Abbey protected its lead until the sixth when the Bears scored all four of their runs. Haily Jarman cracked a two run homer and later, with two outs, Cierra Cockerham blistered a two RBI single to center to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.

Maryann Hoskins earned the win after giving up one run on two hits, striking out seven. Catelyn Presley took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in six plus innings, striking out two.
