Softball Loses To Tusculum, 3-0 In Sunday's First Game At Cougar Classic

The Belmont Abbey softball team was shutout by the Tusculum Pioneers 3-0 in their first game Sunday morning at the Cougar Classic in Columbus, Georgia. The Abbey will close the tournament against Wingate at 1:30.

Tusculum improves to 1-4, while the Crusaders fall to 0-6.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the third, both on bunt singles, and they tacked on another in the fifth on an RBI single by Tavi Parris.

Belmont Abbey had runners in scoring position several times in the game, notably in the first inning when Nicole Stovall led off the game with a single and was sacrificed to second, but she was left stranded after a popout and a groundout.

In the third, Mackenzie Dziendziel produced a two out single to right and raced to second on an Amber Faust single, but a strikeout ended the inning.

The best scoring chance came in the sixth. Kinsey McClure roped a two out single and moved to third on a Dani Marietta double, but they were left stranded after a strikeout ended the inning.

Kelly King went the distance for the Pioneers in the circle, as she tossed a complete game shutout, striking out five and scattering six hits. Catelyn Presley took the loss. She gave up three runs, one earned, striking out four.
