Softball Wraps Up Cougar Classic With 2-0 Loss To Wingate

Belmont Abbey sophomore pitcher Samantha Jacobs struck out a season-high ten batters, but Wingate used a pair of extra base hits, including a homer, to defeat the Crusaders 2-0 this afternoon in the final game of the Cougar Classic in Columbus, Georgia. Wingate improves to 8-0, while the Abbey falls to 0-7.

Jacobs retired the Bulldogs in order in the first, but she gave up a leadoff homer to Alexis Burrell in the second inning.

The Crusaders, the home team, threatened in the bottom of the inning as Kinsey McClure worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on an Amber Faust single and raced to third on a flyout to right by Brooke Baliles. She was stranded there, however as the inning ended on a groundout and strikeout.

Jacobs set the side down in order in the third and the Crusaders again threatened in their half, but again they came up empty.

Mackenzie Dziendziel worked a two out walk and went to second on a walk to Marietta. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Wingate added an insurance run in the sixth as Taylor Laskey led off with a walk and scored on a double by Kalya Saliga.

Jacobs took the loss after allowing seven hits in seven innings, striking out 10 while walking six.

Taylor Bates earned the win after allowing three hits, all singles, while striking out eight and walking six.
