The Belmont Abbey softball team lost 6-2 at Columbus State this afternoon in the opening game of the Cougar Classic. The Cougars improve to 4-2, while the Abbey drops to 0-3. The Crusaders are back in action twice tomorrow, taking on Columbus State at noon and facing Lincoln Memorial at 2:30.
The Crusaders scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. Nicole Stovall led off reaching on an error and moved to second on a walk to Mackenzie Dziendziel. A bunt single by Nikki Faust loaded the bases for Shanie McConnell, who worked a walk to score Stovall for the first Abbey run of the season.
Columbus State matched the Abbey's run in the bottom of the frame and added single runs in the third and fifth to open up a 3-0 lead, but the Crusaders pulled one back in the sixth on Katherine Starnes's first career homer, a shot to left center that closed the gap to 3-2.
The Cougars, however, pulled away in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on a bases loaded double by Morgan Staffins that plated all three runs to move the lead to 6-2, which was the final.
Starnes finished with two of the Abbey's five hits, reaching on a single to right to lead off the second.
Abby Green picked up her first win of the year in the circle for Columbus State, giving up two runs, one earned, striking out three in a complete game effort.
Samantha Jacobs fell to 0-2 after yielding six runs on ten hits in five and two-thirds innings.
