Men's Cross Country Runs to Third-Place Finish Among Conference Carolinas Teams in First Race of 2016

GREENVILLE, SC - The Belmont Abbey Men's Cross Country team opened its season today at the Furman XC Invite in Greenville, SC.  The team ran to a 16th-place finish among non-Division I schools, and third place of the Conference Carolinas teams who competed.

The first Crusader to cross the finish line was junior Patrick Lester, who ran a 28:58.71 race.  Sophomore Thomas Eichorn finished just seven spots behind Lester as he recorded a 29:07.37 time.

Sophomore Darvy Soignet (30:36), freshman Justin Haggerty (31:59), and sophomore Billy Heavener (33:10) rounded out the field.

On his team's performance, Head Coach Nick Radkewich offered the following comments: "The Crusaders posted strong first meet results in a very competitive field on a very challenging course today, led by Captain JR Patrick Lester (28:58) and Co-Captain Thomas Eichorn (29:07).  We saw the outstanding Belmont Abbey debuts of SO Darvey Soignet (30:36), SO Justin Haggerty (31:59) and transfer SO Trey Heavener (33:10).  I was excited to see the men's team race hard today, starting this season ahead of where they began the 2015 campaign.  We will have the addition of SO Nick Snell next Saturday at Winthrop which will help Thomas and Patrick as they should all be working together leading the team.  The teams will have some more rest this week and I expect them to perform well at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational, next Saturday."
