BELMONT, N.C. -- Four players reached double figures in kills, including Liam Maxwell who notched his second straight double-double, as Belmont Abbey outlasted Lincoln Memorial in five sets Saturday, 25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 18-25, 15-10. The victory marked a season-best third in a row for the Crusaders, who also avenged an earlier loss to the Railsplitters.
After the teams split the first two sets, Belmont Abbey (10-14) trailed 5-4 in the fifth. But three straight points led to a 5-1 run that made the score 9-6. After Lincoln Memorial closed to within two at 9-7, another four consecutive points created enough separation to win.
The Abbey took the first two games for a 2-0 lead only to see LMU come roaring back to force the decider. In the opener, the Crusaders broke an 11-11 tie with five straight points to pull away, then used a 7-1 run in the second to stretch a 7-6 lead into 14-7 in the second.
The Railsplitters trailed only 1-0 in the third and never trailed in the fourth after getting off to a 7-1 start.
Belmont Abbey has a 12-day break before hosting Emmanuel on April 6.
