WILSON, N.C. -- Liam Maxwell tallied 11 kills and Brennan Davis added 21 assists, but Barton used a .493 hitting percentage to post a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-16) victory over Belmont Abbey in men's volleyball action Saturday afternoon.
In the opening set, Barton bolted to a 10-5 lead, then used five straight points to turn a 16-11 advantage into a 21-11 margin. After a Belmont Abbey point, the Bulldogs closed out the set 25-13.
In the second set, Barton scored the first two points and four of the first five. With the score 11-8, the Bulldogs used a 6-3 spurt to push the lead to six, 17-11. The lead was 21-15 when the Crusaders tallied back-to-back points to close to four, but Barton tallied four of the last five for a 25-18 win.
Belmont Abbey started strong in the third, leading 4-3, but Barton rattled off six in a row for a 9-4 lead. It stretched the margin to seven, 16-9, but the Crusaders scored three of the next four points to trail 17-12. However, the Bulldogs tallied seven of nine points to set up the first of three match points.
After playing six of the last seven on the road, Belmont Abbey returns home Wednesday to face North Greenville. The action will be the team's #RaisetheRed match.
