NEWARK, N.J. -- Liam Maxwell had 10 kills and Bryce Sullivan added 13 assists, but Belmont Abbey came up short for the second straight night, falling to NJIT 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-16) in men's volleyball action Saturday.
Playing their second match in as many nights in the New York metropolitan area, the Crusaders were outhit .366 to .050 over three sets.
In the opener, Belmont Abbey (2-5) was tied at 15, but gave up five straight points, but then scored seven of the next eight for a 22-21 lead. However, the Highlanders (2-7) answered with three in a row and wound up taking the set 25-23. The second set started with a 7-0 run by NJIT and they went on to a 25-11 victory.
The third set was even at 10-10 when NJIT made its run. It scored four straight points for a 14-10 lead, then answered two Crusader points with another three in a row to make the score 17-12. The Abbey closed to within four at 19-15, but the Highlanders won five of the next six points to earn match point. Belmont Abbey saved one dropped the third 25-17.
Belmont Abbey returns home Tuesday to face Conference Carolinas rival Limestone at 7 p.m. in the Wheeler Center.
