BELMONT, N.C. – Nolan Albrecht, a three-time All-Conference Carolinas selection as a player at Belmont Abbey, has been named the head coach of the Crusaders' men's volleyball program, Director of Athletics Stephen Miss announced today. Albrecht has previously served as the assistant coach of the women's program and helped out with the men's team since mid-March.
"After conducting an extensive search, we are thrilled to name one of our own as our Head Men's Volleyball Coach," Miss said. "Nolan was an exemplary student, decorated athlete, and tremendous all-around ambassador during his college career and has done a tremendous job as an assistant with both the men's and women's programs. We have every confidence in Coach Albrecht's leadership going forward and know he will do a fine job with the formation and development of the young men in our program.
During his short tenure as recruiting coordinator and interim assistant coach of the men's team, Albrecht coached alongside Elyea, guiding the Crusaders to a 6-4 conference record (6-8 overall) which included five straight wins at the end of the regular season, the second-longest run in school history. The Abbey climbed to fifth in the final standings before a quarterfinal match at Limestone. Albrecht was responsible for practice planning and much of the match strategy during the season, leading to substantial statistical improvements in hitting percentage, kills per set, assists per set, digs per set, and aces per set.
His coaching resume also includes serving as the assistant director of player development and head of social media at Carolina Union Volleyball Club in Charlotte, where the 15 Premier club garnered national attention after multiple tournament wins.
A former standout outside hitter and setter for The Abbey, Albrecht was a four-year captain and led the nation in kills (523), kills per set (5.03) and points per set (5.56) while hitting .350 during his senior season. Albrecht was named the AVCA National Player of the Week and finished third in voting for the "Karch Kiraly Award" for the nation's best Outside Hitter.
During his three seasons of active play, Nolan amassed two first-team All-Conference Carolinas selections, one second-team all-conference selection, and multiple Player of the Week awards. His career statistics include 1,157 kills, 594 digs, 142 total blocks, and 70 aces. After sitting out for his entire sophomore season due to injury, he was named "Conference Carolinas' Comeback Player of the Year" after returning to the top 10 in several statistical categories.
Albrecht graduated with honors from Belmont Abbey College with two degrees: Sports Management and Theology. During his time at the Abbey, he performed in three musical productions with the Abbey Players including a lead role as "John the Baptist/Judas" in Godspell and a supporting role as "Reuben" in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. An active participant with the Abbey Volunteers, Nolan was the two-time recipient of the Father "Pop" Martin Award, which is presented to the overall student-athlete who demonstrates the true spirit and heart of Belmont Abbey College.
Nolan has six siblings and eight nieces and nephews. His "littlest" sister Annika won the NCAA Volleyball Championship in 2015 as an outside hitter at Nebraska.
