Crusader Tennis Players Shine in Summer Tournaments

BELMONT, N.C. -- A total of six incoming or returning Belmont Abbey Men's Tennis players have been sharpening their games with tremendous success at ITA Summer Circuit Events hosted around the country this summer.

Mike Nguyen, Austin Schepel, Ryan James, Patrick Newsome, Joseph Horne and Jacob Andress competed in events at Florida State, Wake Forest, UNC Charlotte, Furman, and Texas A&M.

Andress, a rising sophomore, posted an impressive showing at the Furman ITA, knocking out the No. 9-seeded singles player in the Round of 64, followed by a strong charge into the main draw quarterfinals before falling to the overall No. 1 seed from the University of Kentucky.  Andress also made a run to the semifinals of doubles at Furman, having match points to make it to the championship match, before falling in a hotly-contested tiebreaker. His singles and double finishes mark the best main draw results of any Crusader in an ITA summer event.

"I've been really pleased to see the players working on their game and competing hard this summer," Head Coach Michael Salomon said. "A lot of the players played non-ITA tournaments in addition to these results, so I'm very excited to hit the ground running as soon as the season begins this August. A special 'congratulations' goes to Jacob for stepping up and making a deep run in his bracket."
