BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team recorded a season-high five goals to beat conference opponent Lees-McRae on their Raise the Red match at Alumni Field. Mark Trompeter and Clay Dimick each notched two goals apiece and Nando Morales recorded a tally as the Crusaders improved to 4-7-2 this season. The Abbey is 3-5 in conference play.
The Crusaders wasted no time getting on the board when, in the fourth minute, Mark Trompeter finished a rebound in front of the net for his fifth goal of the season to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. Clay Dimick knocked in his fifth goal of the season less than three minutes later on a pass from Geinner Duque. Mark Trompeter finished his sixth goal of the season, his second of the match, in the 20th minute with a brilliant run through the defense and around the keeper before tapping it in. The Abbey took that 3-0 lead into halftime.
Nando Morales kept the momentum rolling in the second frame netting his second goal of the season on a misplayed ball by the keeper. Morales was able to chp his goal over the keepers head to give the Abbey a 4-0 advantage.
The Crusaders outshot the Bobcats 21-5 throughout the match.
Lees-McRae keeper Tyler Pavelt made seven saves on the evening. The Bobcats' record moves to 3-10 on the season and 3-4 in conference.
The men's soccer team will play Mount Olive Saturday. That match will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
