BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey's men's soccer team earned their first win of the season blanking UNC Pembroke 4-0 Saturday afternoon thanks to a hat trick from freshman Luke Wood.
Senior Sean Trompeter opened the scoring in the 22nd minute lacing his first goal of the season over the keepers head from 20 yards out, after a pass from senior Juan Villa led him down the left side of the field.
Luke Wood found the back of the net for his first goal of the season in the 29th minute after a quick give and go from senior Nick Fuller and sophomore Mark Trompeter. Fuller led Trompeter up the left side as Trompeter fed it back to Fuller cutting to the goal. Fuller then flicked the ball across the box to Wood who put it in.
Wood's second goal came in the 39th minute as freshman Josh Irons found a cutting Wood as his pass just escaped a UNC Pembroke defender leaving Wood with a clear shot.
The Crusaders (1-1-1) took a 3-0 lead into halftime having outshot the Braves (1-2) 10-1.
Luke Wood's third goal in the 89th minute came off a penalty kick after an illegal tackle inside the box.
Sophomore goalkeeper Wes Holifield recorded his first shutout of the season.
The Crusaders next match will be Wednesday, September 14 at Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 P.M.
