MT. OLIVE, N.C. - Liam Osborne scored three goals, but Belmont Abbey dropped a 13-8 contest at Mount Olive this afternoon. The loss puts The Abbey at 7-4 on the year, and 2-1 in conference play. The Trojans improved to 9-4, and 3-1 against Conference Carolinas opponents.
Osborne scored the first goal 2:29 into the contest on a man-up opportunity. Mt. Olive scored the next four goals. Adam Wiedemann found the back of the net with 2:46 in the quarter, and Mt. Olive led 4-2 after the first.
It only took Jack Pigott 37 seconds to bring the Crusaders to within a goal in the second. Osborne responded to another Trojan goal at the 9:11 mark. The Abbey defense forced four Trojan turnovers in the quarter, but Mount Olive led 8-5 at halftime.
The Trojans scored the first goal of the third, but man-up scores by Osborne and Kyle McGinley pulled the Crusaders to within two goals at 9-7 with 7:41 in the period. The Trojans led 10-7 heading into the final period. Osborne set up Wiedemann for a score at the 5:46 mark, but two more Mount Olive goals clinched the 13-8 Trojan win.
On the day, Osborne's three goals and one assist led the Crusaders. On the defensive end, Anthony Cesario caused three Trojan turnovers. Belmont Abbey won 18 of the game's 24 faceoffs, as Billy Huss won 11 and Dylan Harmon won seven. The Crusaders scored three man-up goals to Mt. Olive's none.
Belmont Abbey will welcome Limestone College on Saturday, April 14 for a 1 p.m. start.
