12 Crusaders Score Against Shorter

BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-4 victory this afternoon over Shorter University.  The Abbey is now 7-2 on the season, while the Hawks moved to 0-10.

The Crusaders scored early and often, as junior faceoff specialist Billy Huss won the opening faceoff, ran down field, and scored just 11 seconds into the game.  It only took attack Adam Wiedemann another 1:11 to make it a 2-0 game off a pass from Callum Tanner.  Huss and Wiedemann each would score again in the final 1:15 of the period, and Belmont Abbey led 5-1 when the quarter expired.

The second started out much like the first, as Wiedemann set attack MJ Miller up for a goal and a 6-1 advantage.  It only took a minute from there for Richard Fisher to tally another Abbey goal.  Later in the period, Kyle McGinley, Miller, and Collin Grippo each scored in a span of 1:10.  The Abbey defense was also very strong, limiting the Hawks to one shot in the first 10 minutes of the quarter.  Another Wiedemann goal with 2:33 put the Abbey in front 12-1, which would be the score at halftime.

Under two minutes into the second half, Fisher scored his second goal of the day.  Later in the period, Zach Hahn scored a goal, then set up Matthew Fernandez for another.  That made it 16-1 heading into the final period.

With 10:34 to play, Jason Hollister scored a man-up goal.  With 4:37 to play, Eric Berbrick capped off the scoring, and the Crusaders took the contest 19-4.

On the day, Wiedemann led the Abbey's charge with three goals and three assists.  Huss, Fisher, Miller, and Liam Osborne each scored twice.  Huss picked up a team-high six ground balls, while Hahn was next with four.  As a team Belmont Abbey earned 45 ground balls, to Shorter's 23. Huss also won eight of his nine faceoffs.

Head Coach Chris Barrett offered some of his thoughts on today's game: "I am proud of the way the boys bounced back from Wingate.  We had an opportunity to get everyone in today and it was great to see the young guys out there today.  We have a huge week coming up with two excellent opponents so we must get back to work on Monday."

Belmont Abbey will next face Limestone on Wednesday, March 29.  That game will take place at 7pm in Gaffney, SC.
