Men's Lacrosse Downed At Florida Southern, 15-9

The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team opened its spring break trip with a 15-9 loss at Florida Southern this evening. Belmont Abbey falls to 3-5, while the Mocs improve to 4-2.

Belmont Abbey plays again Sunday at Shorter College.

Riley Quinlan led the Abbey with four goals, two coming in the fourth quarter. Scotty Steele and Connor Sellars both netted two. Joey McGinley added the other. Steele and Corey Cooke both logged one assist.

The Crusaders led 4-3 after one period as it ended the stanza with an offensive barrage. The Abbey scored the final three goals of the quarter in the last 4:37, as Steele evened the match at one with a man down tally. The Mocs countered with two unanswered to move on top, 3-1.

Belmont Abbey closed the period with a flurry, as a goal from Sellars and two-straight from Quinlan-both coming in the final 2:40-surged the Crusaders ahead 4-3 after one.

The momentum stalled as Florida Southern held the Crusaders scoreless in the second period, while netting five winners on 11 shots to carry an 8-4 advantage into the break.

Steele scored the lone Abbey goal in the third period, a strike with 50 seconds left, but the Mocs netted four in the period to carry a 12-5 lead into the final period.

Quinlan scored two of the Abbey's four fourth period goals, with Sellars and Steele netting the others, but the Crusaders never cut the lead to any fewer than five as the Mocs earned the six goal victory.

Brett Lawless made six saves in the first 32 minutes before he was replaced by Ryan McMahon, who played the final 27:31 in the cage. He made four saves.
