CENTRAL, S.C. -- Deion Lane scored a team-season-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and a strong first-half shooting performance lifted Belmont Abbey to an 86-71 victory over Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Belmont Abbey (7-8, 3-4) shot 52.8 percent (20-38) in the opening period, while holding Southern Wesleyan to 43.8 percent. The Crusaders took the lead for good when they reversed a 19-17 deficit on a Troy Henderson layup and free throw with 10:26 left in the period. Nick Meyers followed with a layup for a three-point lead.
The advantage was 26-25 when Belmont Abbey tallied seven straight points over a three-minute span. The Crusaders also finished the half on a 9-2 run over the final 1:50, sparked by a Lane three
Southern Wesleyan cut the margin to nine, 63-54, midway through the second, but Lane again came up with a basket to quell the rally. The biggest lead was 17 at 77-60 on a Ferguson three with 5:49 to play.
Belmont Abbey returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Erskine.
