Ferguson's Threes Lead Crusaders to 77-73 Win at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Ben Ferguson connected on field goals, all from three-point range, and four other players reached double figures in points, leading Belmont Abbey to a 77-73 Conference Carolinas win over Erskine Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.

In addition to Ferguson's 15 points, Deion Lane tallied 14, while Gunnar Hardarson, Drexler Clark and Aidan Richards each chipped in 11. Clark added nine rebounds and six assists to his totals.

Belmont Abbey (5-4, 1-1) bolted to a 10-point halftime lead, 46-36, by hitting 51.6 percent from the field (16-31), including eight of 16 from three-point range. The Crusaders led 15-13 when Ferguson hit back-to-back treys, extending the lead to eight, 21-13. The margin reached as much as 13, 37-24, on a Hardarson triple with 4:01 remaining in the period.

In the second half, the Flying Fleet closed to three, 52-49 with 15:37 to play, but a 6-0 run, capped by back-to-back jumpers by Richard, pushed the lead back to nine. Erskine rallied again, using a 6-1 spurt to 65-63 at the 6:18 mark, but a Ferguson three and Lane jumper, stretched the lead back to seven.

Clark nailed five of six free throws in the final 53 seconds to clinch the victory.

Belmont Abbey now takes a week off for fall semester final exams before hosting Limestone next Saturday. Tipoff at the Wheeler Center is set for 12 noon.
