BELMONT, N.C. -- Junior Deion Lane tallied 19 points to lead three Crusaders in double figures, but Barton rallied for a 79-74 victory over Belmont Abbey in men's basketball action Wednesday night. Drexler Clark added 17 points, while Jacob Wilson chipped in 11 points and team highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (nine).
Miguel Brown led the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-1) with 18 points.
Belmont Abbey (3-3, 0-1) led by as many as 21 points in the opening period, hitting a sizzling 54.1 percent from the field (20-37). The Crusaders broke a 2-2 tie with five straight points, , then scored eight in a row to turn a 9-8 lead into 17-8 with 12:19 remaining. A 7-0 run less than a minute later sent the lead to double digits for the first time, 28-14 by the 9:47 mark.
The biggest margin was 41-20 with 4:05 remaining when Clark hit a three to cap another 7-0 spurt. However, Barton was able to chip away, outscoring the Crusaders 14-6 over the remaining time to close to within 47-34 at the break.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 9-2 run to trail by six, 49-43, then got to within a basket, 54-52 by the 13:10 mark. After the Crusaders sent the lead back to seven with five in a row, Barton eventually retook the lead 65-63 with an 8-0 run near the eight-minute mark.
The Crusaders tied the score at 72 wth 3:06 left, but four straight points sealed the victory. Belmont Abbey cooled to 31.4 percent after the break, while it was Barton connecting on 59.3 percent in the second. The Bulldogs also held a 41-36 advantage on the boards.
Belmont Abbey returns to non-conference play again this weekend when it welcomes North Georgia to the Wheeler Center. Tipoff is slated for 2:30 p.m., a change of 30 minutes from the original schedule.
