Late Slump Dooms Abbey Against Barton

By John Fitzgerald

The Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball team fell to Barton 79-65 tonight in Wilson.  The loss drops the Abbey record to 9-18 on the year and 5-14 against conference opponents.  Barton improves to 17-9 overall with a 12-6 conference record.

Belmont Abbey started the game out strong, taking an early three-point lead.  Then, with 7:45 to go in the half, a Barton layup put the Bulldogs in front 26-18.  It was the largest deficit the Crusaders would have the entire half.  The Abbey's solid defense forced Barton into a drought of 4:45, in which it only scored one point.  The drought did not end until the final minute of the half.  At halftime Barton owned a narrow 36-35 lead.

The second half was neck-to-neck most of the way.  A layup by Sean Moriarty tied the game at 41 three minutes into the half.  Neither team built a lead bigger than three for the next ten, minutes when Barton's Danny Shand scored seven straight game points.

The Crusaders, however, only managed to score two field goals in the final 8:57 and suffered a
79-65 loss.

Sophomore Deion Lane led the way for the Abbey, with 18 points, seven rebounds, and two steals, all game-highs.  Fellow sophomore Nick Hough also scored 18.

Belmont Abbey will next visit Pfeiffer on Tuesday for its final game of the regular season.
