Belmont Abbey guard Ray Chen tied for the game-high with 15 points while Deion Lane and Nick Hough added 12 each but Barton outscored the Crusaders 43-29 in the second half after leading by just seven at the half to earn an 84-63 victory this evening inside Wilson Gymnasium. Barton improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Belmont Abbey opened the game on an 11-4 spurt in the opening 4:11 after Barton scored the first three points of the game.
The Bulldogs battled back to regain the lead at 14-13 with 10:52 to play and then the two teams traded the lead for the next several minutes until Barton pulled away late in the half.
With the Crusaders ahead 27-25 with 5:02 to play, Barton closed the half on a 16-7 burst to take a 41-34 lead into the break.
Both teams shot very well in the half, as Barton totaled 52 percent shooting with the Crusaders converting 53 percent of their shots. Lane netted ten of his points in the stanza, in just 14 minutes.
The second half saw Barton extend its lead over the visitors, as the Bulldogs outscored the Abbey 43-29 as the lead moved into double digits and stayed there for the remainder of the game. Barton converted 58 percent of its shots in the half, with the Crusaders converting 52 percent. Chen scored 13 of his 15 in the second half as he finished 5-7 shooting from the floor.
Chen scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting with three rebounds and two assists. Hough added 12 points and four rebounds and Lane contributed 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
For the game, Belmont Abbey shot 53 percent from the floor but converted just 3-15 from three-point range and 8-18 from the free throw line.
The Crusaders are back in action Wednesday with a road game at Mount Olive.
