The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team trailed by just seven at halftime, but Lees-McRae outscored the Abbey 51-26 in the second half to pull away and earn a 91-59 Conference Carolinas victory this evening inside the Wheeler Center. The Bobcats improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Belmont Abbey trailed 40-33 at the half despite turning the ball over 17 times. Belmont Abbey closed the half on a 10-5 burst to chop the lead down from 35-23 to 40-33 at the break. Ray Chen scored all of his 13 points in the first half while handing out six assists. Drexler Clark added five assists as 12 of the Abbey's 17 buckets were assisted.
The Crusaders shot 43 percent in the first half and held the Bobcats to just 36 percent, but the Bobcats offense came alive in the final 20 minutes as they made 18 of their 25 shots (75 percent) as the lead rose to as high as 32 points.
