Men's Basketball Downed By Mars Hill, 85-55 In Season Opener

The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with an 85-55 loss to Mars Hill in the first game of the OrthoCarolina Tip-Off Challenge hosted by Wingate University at Cuddy Arena. It was the season opener for both teams.

Mars Hill never trailed as it opened the game on an 11-3 run and never looked back. The Lions carried a 38-23 lead into the break after the Crusaders closed the stanza on an 11-4 run. Neither team shot particularly well in the first 20 minutes, as the Lions converted 36 percent from the floor while the Crusaders made 32 percent of their shots.

The Lions lead rose to as high as 32 in the second half as they shot 61 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and converted 48 percent for the contest.

Belmont Abbey shot 34 percent as Ray Chen led the way with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists. Drexler Clark added 14 and Markel Pollard added 11 and eight rebounds and a blocked shot.

The Crusaders are back in action Saturday night at 7:00 when they take on the host Wingate Bulldogs in the final game of the OrthoCarolina Tip-off Challenge.
